What are common reasons for mailings being rejected?

  1. Expired CASS certification: Always check the date in small print at the bottom of your PS Form 3553 CASS Report. That date is 6 months after the certification date on the least-recently-certified address in your database. If just one address is out of date, your entire mailing could be rejected.
  2. CASS certification date on Enhanced Carrier Route mailings: Although regular mailings require CASS certification every 6 months, carrier route mailings require it every 3 months. Make sure the date at the bottom of the CASS report is at least 3 months away.
  3. Wrong or no barcode: Use delivery point barcodes, above or below the address.
  4. Not doing a presort: Just printing in ZIP Code order is generally not enough to qualify for Automation discounts. In Envelope Manager, do a presort. (If you are new to this process, see our documentation page for help.)
  5. Putting AUTOCR or ECRLOT on undeservedly: Only pieces being mailed at enhanced carrier route rates get those endorsements.
  6. Not putting AUTOCR or ECRLOT on when you need them: Pieces being mailed at enhanced carrier route rates must have those endorsement lines.
  7. Stapling your mailpiece: Staples are forbidden on Automation mailings because they harm the U.S. Postal Service’s equipment.
