I have a file with names in it. How do I get them into Envelope Manager?
- First, you need to determine what kind of file you have.
- In Windows Explorer, go to the View menu, choose Options, and turn off Hide MS-DOS Extensions. What is the 3-letter extension on the name of the file?
- If it ends in CSV, you have a comma-delimited text file.
- If it ends in DBF, you have what we call a generic dbase file.
- If it ends in XLS, you have an Excel file. You need to run Excel and save the file in DBF format.
- If it ends in DOC, you have a word processing document. You need to run a word processor, make sure the addresses are either in a single column with single blank lines between them -OR- in a delimited list, and save the file in Text Only format.
- If it ends in WPD, you have a Word Perfect document. You need to run Word Perfect, make sure the addresses are either in a single column with single blank lines between them -OR- in a delimited list, and save the file in Text - Generic Word Processing format.
- If it ends in TXT or ASC, you have some form of text file. Open the file in a text editor like Notepad. If all the information is in perfect columns, you have either a tab-delimited file or a fixed width file. If the information is separated by commas, you have a comma-delimited file. If the addresses are in blocks against the left margin with single blank lines between them, you have what we call a word processing file.
- Check the import instructions for the file type you have.
